For those unfamiliar with YouTube and its services, it's time to answer this question: What's a YouTube channel? A YouTube channel is located on YouTube and is run by users. Any user account that holds videos is considered a channel. YouTube runs like TV, and even if one user has a "show" (video), it's going to be a channel for people to view.

Some channels will host videos of actual TV shows, like Family Guy or Naruto. However, this is frowned upon by YouTube as those videos may violate copyright terms. Other channels will be a blog but using videos. We call this video blogging. Sites like As You Want It are similar to video blogging, or vlogs. Video producers who have much experience in a certain topic area can create a channel based around their knowledge, therefore making tutorial videos and a tutorial channel. These videos basically teach viewers all they need to know about the topic. A great example of a tutorial channel is IllusionFactory.

Like the name suggests, skit channels are made with actors, and both the producer/director/filmmaker and outside video partners can appear in these videos. Currently, 5 of the top 15 most subscribed YouTube channels are skit channels. The last form is a music/music video channel. These channels host either artists working under a certain label or amateur songwriters who wish to advertise their skill. Esmeedenters and UniversalMusicGroup are music or music video channels.

YouTube channels and their URLs are named and labeled by username meaning that whatever name you sign up with will be your channel name. Some names are conveniently selected for their video purposes, like WHATTHEBUCKSHOW, who's videos are, in fact, named What The Buck Show. Other names are not so convenient and are like any other AIM screen name, like TheHill88. Regardless, your URL will look like the following: http://www.youtube.com/user/XXXXX The 5 X's represent your chosen username. Note that any capitalization will appear in the URL. For example, if you have the username WatchTheIdiot, your URL will differ from watchtheidiot, making it /user/WatchTheIdiot instead of /user/watchtheidiot. However, other users will not be able to take your name. If you have WatchTheIdiot, nobody can take watchtheidiot, Watchtheidiot, watchTHEidiot, etc.

People can choose to be notified of your new videos by subscribing to your channel. Subscribing means that anytime you or another YouTuber posts a new video, the subscribers will know of the video at their YouTube home page. Subscribers are very influential on YouTube and basically make or break the performer. They will be the first to comment, rate, view, and will be pretty much the source of new subscribers. They work like car batteries, not to make subscribers objects. With this, you're basically set to create your own channel. Make sure to have your channel stand out, but more on that later.
